How technology monitors driving to make it more efficient

The true start of the engines of autonomous cars, level 5, does not arrive and it is still at least a decade to see them coexist with drivers on the streets and highways . However, technology is increasingly an indispensable element in new vehicles coming out of car manufacturers’ factories.

The advancement of technology in vehicles is unstoppable and more and more are computers with wheels . A Deloitte report points out that electronics represents 40% of the total cost of a new car. In 2000 that percentage was 18% and it is expected to reach 45% by the end of this decade.

Technology that is also made in Spain. Hello Auto, a neo-insurer, has designed a kind of technological black box that allows the way of driving of each of the drivers of the vehicle to be registered.

This digital copilot, similar to a taximeter, displays information related to the route or road, such as the maximum speed allowed and the speed at which you are traveling. “In addition to speed, the intensity of turns, acceleration and braking are measured . These data are obtained both from the vehicle’s computer and from the device itself, “says Martín Martínez, development director of Hello Auto.

The system, moreover, assures Martínez, “shows the informative notices of the DGT with information on the presence of radars or incidents, such as retentions or upcoming accidents.”

It also includes an approved digital breathalyzer and a starter lock that prevents the car from starting if the alcohol content by expired air exceeds the legal maximum. “A security system that will be mandatory for EU cars in the coming years,” he says.

The device converts any car “no matter its age,” he details. Currently the average age of the mobile park in Spain is over ten years. “Hello Auto Connect is installed in the insured’s vehicle and both the device and the installation are free”, he highlights.

All the driving information is transmitted to the driver and also to the insurer, “this allows the driver to be evaluated and the risk measured,” adds Martínez.

The Hello Auto Connect system sends information regarding the use and driving of the vehicle, “a result computes directly in the price of the policy, which can be cut even in half for real good drivers,” he says.
